Voted by many blogs as one of the top fitness trends of 2016 and 2017, functional training has been increasing in popularity for a number of years. But what is it, actually? The basic idea is to build overall strength that makes everyday movements easier. These exercises help you learn how to move your body in the day to day in order to minimize pain and injury over time.
As an Equinox member, I have access to many different types of functional training classes, as well as its “cousins” bodyweight training and HIIT. After a few months with my all-access membership in New York City, I was able to develop an effective routine that’s both fun and has helped me get into shape. Since joining Equinox, I’ve lost about 13 pounds and went from 31% to 27% body fat — and I’m still making progress!
Left was taken in July 2015, the right was taken yesterday at my aerial yoga bachelorette party! There’s about a 35 lb. difference between these two pictures, as well as a 10% reduction in body fat.
The diversity of classes that Equinox offers allows for a truly balanced routine. I wanted to lay out what I do in a week and highlight some of my favorite classes. This schedule has worked well for me, allowing an adequate amount of rest time and never getting boring!
Playground workouts are fast becoming a hot trend in New York City, with an increasing number of classes being offered all over Manhattan. But what is a playground workout? And more importantly what are the Best Playground Workouts in NYC.
I tried the top three playground classes in New York, and I’m excited to tell you all about them. All of the workouts are good, but each studio has a totally different personality and vibe. Try them all, and see which one suits you best!
Throwback Fitness has one of the cooler stories of studios I’ve been to (apart from ConBody, which is a whole other story). The founders are former investment bankers turned fitness professionals, and they’ve created a workout that really puts fun at the center. They also manage to maintain some of the best pricing in the city at only $16-18 per individual class, making them a must-try.
If you’re a normal person, the word “playground” probably evokes feelings of fun and childhood freedom. But if you’re anything like me, the word can bring up feelings of dread and memories of being the last one picked for sports teams in school. As a kid, I was the six-year-old reading a book alone while the rest of her peers played jump rope.
When I saw a class called “The Playground Experience” on the Equinox schedule back when I first signed up in December, I wanted to reclaim the word for myself. The process of learning how to work out over the course of the prior year had shown me that just because I wasn’t a “natural athlete” didn’t mean that I couldn’t be fit or athletic. And boy, was I in for a treat.
