Australia-based F45 is currently the world’s fastest-growing functional training network, with 750 franchises in 26 countries globally. They opened their first location in New York in April 2017, and the studio has had a fair amount of buzz since, with members claiming to have achieved drastic results in as little as 1-2 weeks. They’ve had so much success here that the franchise openers are expanding to the Lower East Side later this year. So, of course, I had to try it. While I’m not as big a fan as some of its staunchest advocates in the city, I definitely see the appeal and would recommend it to any functional training lover looking for a new fitness home.
The week between Christmas and New Years is always a bit of a twilight zone for those of us who don’t take off from work. So many of our colleagues are on vacation, which can make it hard for those of us who are actually in the office to focus. This year, I decided to start my New Years resolution a week early and find more time during the day to get moving. Armed with my new FitBit Charge 2 (which I’m obsessed with), I leveraged Epic Hybrid Training’s $29 for one week introductory deal and did three lunchtime classes in a row. What I learned? If you live near their NYC locations in Bryant Park or East 54th Street and want to get in serious shape, this small studio may be just the right fit for you.
It’s 7:30 am, the sun only just beginning to come out on a winter Friday. The room is lit up in pink, with the DJ pumping beats in the corner, the wall next to her covered in pictures of sensual lips. This doesn’t describe my latest night out (lol this geriatric hasn’t done those in years), but the class I took at 305 Fitness in Midtown East. Not exactly known for my dancing skills (and actually somewhat known for the opposite), I was a little nervous to take this class. Although I’d heard that it was a lot of fun, I was self-conscious about my lack of ability to sway my hips in any direction whatsoever. So I picked a spot in the back corner, thinking that it would be a safe spot. Little did I know…
Wednesday is usually my rest day, and often the only one I’ll take all week. But with Thanksgiving coming up tomorrow and some poor eating decisions since my wedding, I decided to set the alarm for 5:30 am and brave the rain to get to Equinox East 53rd St. for TRX Max. After an hour (20 minutes of which was spent with some extra caffeine), I didn’t regret it. TRX Max is a heart-pounding, sweat-inducing workout that will get you deceptively sore after only approximately 24 minutes of work.
In the last year or so, boxing has started to take over the New York City workout scene, with studios like Rumble, Work Train Fight, and Everybody Fights expanding all over Manhattan. While I’ve been wanting to try a class, I’ve been a little bit apprehensive. Although I love working out, I’m not exactly known for my coordination, and I was concerned as to how I’d manage complex punching choreography.
Thankfully, Everybody Fights offers comprehensive circuit training (which does include boxing!) in addition to its fight classes, providing a good entry point for us non-boxers. The midtown location’s urban chic vibe and fully stocked locker rooms give us a reason to come back and learn how to box.
